Trainee ( Monsoon Communication Associate) , RAIN Project at DCA Nepal

DanChurchAid (DCA) is a Danish humanitarian and Development organisation with a vision of a world without hunger, poverty and oppression, in which popular and political powers constantly work strongly and actively for just and sustainable distribution and use of the earth’s resources. We have been supporting development work in Nepal since the 1980s. Currently, we focus on the following themes to improve the lives of the most marginalised communities in some of the most remote and vulnerable regions of Nepal, applying a rights-based approach:

According to the DCA Nepal Country Programme Strategy (2022-2026), we are committed to two cross-commitments: (i) Gender Equality and (ii) Climate Action.

DCA Nepal is implementing the RAIN project with People in Need with financial support from the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO), United Kingdom. This project aims to strengthen the early action and climate resilience of communities at risk of multi-hazards in Madhesh and Lumbini provinces.

DCA Nepal hereby invites applications, for the position of Trainee (Monsoon Communication Associate) from interested candidates to support and contribute to the overarching early action and climate resilience aims of the RAIN project. 

Trainee (Monsoon Communication Associate), RAIN Project

The Trainee will be based at the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology (DHM) and will report to the DCA Climate Action Advisor and EWS-EA lead PIN in close coordination with the consortium team. S/he will be deployed during monsoon (4 months starting from mid-June). S/He will handle and respond to design and push content related to monsoon awareness and early warning on social media platforms of DHM for communicating and disseminating the early warning sign, and related messages. All communication products in social media channels need to be cleared by DHM before posting.

Additionally, S/He will respond to all calls received on 1155. S/He will support in connecting DHM with national, regional and local NEWS agencies for weather-related news/articles during the Monsoon. S/ he will also cross-post all communication from other relevant social media handles such as NDRRMA and vice versa. 

Duty Station: Department of Hydrology and Meteorology 

Contract Duration: June- October 2025

Key Responsibilities:

  • Handling calls on 1155.
  • Preparing content for the social media platform of DHM (Facebook, Twitter, TikTok) and seeking clearance for its posting.
  • Handling the official DHM Viber channel (S/He can use the platform for posting innovative warnings/advisories)
  • Connecting DHM with national, regional and local news agencies for weather-related news/articles Monsoon
  • Helping DHM to prepare innovative maps for special bulletins, warnings and nowcasting 
  • Help DHM to prepare & disseminate audio/video content for forecast and warnings

Qualification, Skill and Knowledge:

  • Master’s in social sciences, mass communication, media studies, Disaster Risk Reduction, Environmental Science, Natural Resources Management, or any other relevant field with knowledge and experience in understanding and communicating forecast information. 
  • At least a year of relevant work experience in handling social media, content creation and content writing related to Disaster risk reduction, forecast communication and early action.
  • Verbal and written communication skills both in English and Nepali
  • Skills and experience in using design audiovisual software including video production, publication design, and podcast recording, amongst others
  • Proactive with a high aptitude to learn and work with a team under high pressure
  • Role model for diversity, inclusion and belongingness
